Status
This species is one of the most successful damselflies, and breeds in an extensive range of habitats, from vegetated creeks, to lakes or ponds. The subspecies found in Maryland, Argia fumipennis violacea, is also often called Violet Dancer (Paulson, 2011). This common species surely occurs statewide.

The variable dancer (Argia fumipennis) is a damselfly of the family Coenagrionidae. It is native to North America, where it is widespread throughout the east and present in the interior western United States.[1]
The male of the subspecies A. f. violacea (the violet dancer) is purple with a blue tip.[2]
