Eastern Wormsnake (Carphophis amoenus) is a very small snake species which is active beneath ground (fossorial). Its coloration and narrow head, adapted for burrowing, give it an uncanny resemblance to an oversized earthworm. This unassuming snake is normally found under cover objects, or underground, in areas with soil soft enough for burrowing, where it feeds primarily on earthworms. Apparently, periods of dry weather cause them to retreat deeper underground, where the soil is moister (Tennant, 2003). Eastern Wormsnake is found throughout Maryland, except for high elevations of western Maryland. This snake may be common, but its secretive nature may cause it to go unnoticed much of the time (Maryland DNR site).
