Appalachian Jewelwing (Calopteryx angustipennis) is a large, very long-bodied and attenuated damselfly found in clean, usually rocky, streams and small rivers. The specific epithet angustipennis refers to the very narrow wings of this species, a distinctive feature. This impressive species was only recently discovered to occur in Maryland. It inhabits the upper Potomac and larger tributaries in Washington and Allegany Counties (Richard Orr's Dragonflies and Damselflies of Maryland and the District of Columbia website). It is considered an S1-S2.
