This species is widely reported in historic documents as Gyromitra fastigiata, a European species (Kuo 2012, Mushroom Expert).
Description
Cap: Fertile (upper surface) mostly reddish-brown; lower (sterile surface) pale brown to whitish; deep irregular, wrinkled folds may be saddle-like. Stalk: White; may look ribbed; usually wider than high; equal or wider at base.
Relationships
Found as singles or in small groups on ground under hardwoods. (J. Solem, pers. comm.)
