Status

Oscillatoria is actually a prokaryote, but has been classified as a Cyanophyta or blue-green algae. There is a revision in progress that may transfer all of the plantonic blooming strains into a new genus, Planktothrix. (L. Biechele, pers. comm.)

Description

"Oscillatoria is noted for its oscillating movement and it may actually crawl out of a shallow dish. My collections have actually "crawled-up" the sides of jars!" (L. Biechele, pers. comm.)
