Status

Aphrodite Fritillary (Argynnis aphrodite) is another species of Speyeria, generally similar in appearance to Great Spangled Fritillary (S. cybele), but with a less extensive buffy submarginal band on the underside of the hind wing, and smaller in size. In Maryland, most commonly found in Garrett County.

Description

Aphrodite Fritillary is easily confused with Atlantis Fritillary. One of the easiest ways to tell the two species apart is by eye color. Aphrodite Fritillary has yellow-green eyes and Atlantis Fritillary has blue-gray eyes. Both Aphrodite and Atlantis Fritillary are smaller than the much larger Great Spangled Fritillary.

Relationships

Host plants are species in the family Violaceae including Arrow-leaved Violet and Primrose-leaved Violet.
