Firedot Lichen (Caloplaca holocarpa) in Howard Co., Maryland (2/6/2011). Per Richard, "The main body of the lichen itself (the thallus) is so embedded within the bark of its deciduous tree host that it is not visible. It is only when the bright orange reproductive structures (apothecia) break through the bark that it becomes noticeable."
