Considered by Terrell and Peterson to be rare in Maryland (Terrell & Peterson, 2009). The varieties microstachya and muricata are both resent in Maryland. The variety microstachya is not native to Maryland.

Echinochloa muricata is a species of grass known by the common names rough barnyard grass and American barnyard grass. It is native to Eurasia and much of North America.[1][2]

It is an annual grass growing one half to one meter in height.
