Coccocarpia erythroxyli is a foliose lichen found in tropical and subtropical woods (as well as some alpine habitats). It usually grows on bark in hardwood forests. Another species, Coccocarpia palmicola has also been reported from Maryland.

Description

The upper surface of Fruiting Shell Lichen is dark blue-gray with rounded lobes. Unlike Coccocarpia palmicola, the upper surface is smooth and lacks isidia. The lower surface is covered in a thick blue-green to blue-black tomentum.
