Status

With very few exceptions, Sphagnum species cannot be identified without a microscope. Accuracy of species-level identifications without micrographs should be carefully considered.

Description

In general, it is necessary to see the shape of individual leaves and leaf cells for identification. A thin cross-section through the leaf where the shape of the green leaf cells is visible will be necessary.

Where To Find

Sphagnum species can be found in many freshwater habitats including seasonally (or even just occasionally) damp places. Sphagnum is a major component of the bogs in western Maryland and swamps throughout the state.
