Status
Desmodesmus is a microscopic green alga. It is related to Scenedesmus and many species previously assigned to Scenedesmus are now recombined into Desmodesmus species..
Description
Unlike Scenedesmus, Desmodesmus has surface ornamentation on the cells. Species often have spines at the apices and ornamentation on the cell surface (granules, ridges, etc.). Careful observation of these features under high magnification is necessary to identify species. Cell shape and the overall configuration of the colony (called a coenobium) are also necessary for identification.
Where To Find
Desmodesmus species are common in freshwater and brackish habitats throughout Maryland.
