Status

Some of our most common bracket fungi are in the genus Stereum. Crowded Parchment and members of the Stereum ostrea complex (False Turkey Tails) can be found throughout Maryland and at any time of year.

Description

Stereum species are distinguished from one another by growth form, color, the kinds of hairs on the upper surface and whether the spore surface stains yellow when bruised. There are identification notes on many of the species pages.

Where To Find

All species grow only on wood.

Eating mushrooms can be dangerous. One should do so only with expert advice and great care. MBP accepts no liability for injury sustained in consuming fungi or other biodiversity. Use of media featured on Maryland Biodiversity Project is only permitted with express permission of the photographer.
