Description
Bonnets (Mycena) are generally relatively small mushrooms with a bell-shaped cap, delicate (but not brittle) stem, and a white spore print. This is an extremely diverse genus with hundreds of species in North America. Identification of many species requires thorough examination of almost all available characteristics: habitat and substrate; color; cap and stem features; structure of gills; and spores. A key to many species has been provided by Michael Kuo (Mushroom Expert).
