Status
This likely undescribed species differs in external appearance from the similar M. stellella and flies from early July to late August in Maryland. M. stellella has a conspicuous black patch along the forewing inner margin just beyond half wing length, a black band near the apex of the labial palpus, and many other black scales on the thorax and forewing. In M. sp. 4, these black markings are lighter gray or brown and less conspicuous. M. sp. 4 has a DNA barcode cluster (BOLD:AAE2601) closely related to that of M. stellella (BOLD:ABY4430), a flower and seed borer in evening primrose (Oenothera sp.). (T. Reichard, pers. comm.)
Relationships
Larval hosts unknown but may be evening primroses as in closely related species.
