Status

The shape of these mites gives them the common name of Snout Mites (Order: Trombidiformes, Suborder: Prostigmata, Superfamily: Bdelloidea). Snout Mites (Bdelloidea) consists of two mite families the Bdellidae and Cunaxidae. The Snout Mite in the above photograph belongs to the family Cunaxidae. Currently there are at least 20 genera and 400 species of Cunaxidae that have been described worldwide, but there are many more that have yet to be named. (R. Orr, pers. comm.)
