Found solitary or in groups, sometimes fused; on ground under hardwoods or in mixed woods.

Description

Fruiting body: Yellow-brown to blackish-brown, velvety, irregular upper surface; zonate shades of yellow, orange, and brown may be present; yellow / white, somewhat wavy margin when young. Pores: Somewhat decurrent, varied shapes when young; at maturity developing concentric, thick, pseudogills. Stalk: Dark brown, often tapers to base, may appear absent from above.
