Spores collected from Callistosporium purpureomarginatum in Howard Co., Maryland (9/7/2014). Ellipsoid/irregular, smooth, hyaline; measured 5.0-5.5 X 3.6-4.1 microns. (Dark color is an atrifact of the photograph.)
Cap: Purplish-red when moist to pinkish-tan when dry; bluish/brown-purple marginal band easiest to see when cap is dry; smooth; convex to nearly flat in age, often with center depression; flesh yellowish. Gills: Pinkish-yellow with purple tinge to mostly yellow; edges reddish-purple. Stalk: Reddish-purple usually with yellow at apex, white mycelium at base; hollow (J. Solem, pers. comm.).
Where To Find
Habitat: Solitary or small groups on well-decayed oak logs.

Callistosporium purpureomarginatum is a species of agaric fungus in the family Callistosporiaceae. Found in the United States, it was officially described in 1996.[1]
Callistosporium purpureomarginatum is a small mushroom with a distinctive purplish red cap which discolours at it ages or dries.
Cap: 1-4cm. Starts convex before flattening with age. Stem: 1.5-4cm in height and 2-5mm in thickness. Gills: Purple brown, discolouring to yellow or olive whilst sometimes retaining purple fringes. Spore print: White. Spores: Smooth, ellipsoid. 4.7 x 2.5-4 μm. Taste: Indistinct or bitter. Smell: Indistinct.[3]
