Status

"Braun (1917) considered this species a synonym of the walnut-feeding Stigmella juglandifoliella, but Wilkinson & Scoble (1979) synonymized it with the hophornbeam-feeding Stigmella ostryaefoliella. However, Erik van Nieukerken has found that Stigmella caryaefoliella is in fact a distinct species" (BugGuide).
