This is an Eastern Shore speciality, often found partially buried in sandy soils near pines (L. Biechele, pers. comm.).
Description
Cap: Wide (up to 14 cm), tawny yellow to brownish-colored, viscid, often coated with sand and needle litter. Odor has a distinctive marzipan or bitter almond smell. Gills: Yellowish-creamy colored and forked near the stem. Stem: Thick, swollen near the center, but tapers to the base. (L. Biechele, pers. comm.)
