Found solitary or in groups on ground in coniferous or hardwood forests.

Description

Cap: Reddish-ochre to brown with purple tints in age; surface cracks into scales in age; hemispherical, then convex with incurved margin (flat in age); flesh pale violet. Gills: Purple or purple-brown. Stalk: Ochre brown with dark brown fibers; ring-like zone, then violet woolly hairs covering enormous bulb at base (J. Solem, pers. comm.).
