Status

Ulota crispa has been frequently reported from Maryland. The Flora of North America project used a rather broad definition of Ulota crispa that included Ulota crispula as a synonym. One recent study (Capparos et al. 2016, Bot. Journal Linn. Soc. 180: 427-451) has suggested that these are not synonyms and that Ulota crispa does not occur in Eastern North America. If this hypothesis is supported, it is likely that the species in Maryland is better called Ulota crispula. Ulota intermedia may also be present.
