Long-tailed Salamander (Eurycea longicauda) is a distinctive, slender salamander, with an exceptionally long tail. The coloration varies from yellowish-orange to deep reddish orange, with black spots. The spots on the tail are aligned vertically, often in a herringbone pattern. This species favors moist habitats, including seeps, rock crevices, and stream banks, often under cover objects. Long-taileds in Maryland range through the Piedmont into the mountains of western Maryland. They appear to be absent from much of the coastal plain, including the entirety of the eastern shore (Conant & Collins, 1998; Maryland DNR site). This salamander breeds in the winter.
