Status:

Northern Mole Kingsnake (Lampropeltis rhombomaculata) ranges into the southern counties of Maryland's western shore, the northernmost extent of its known range. This serpent occupies upland mixed forests, agricultural fields and pastureland, and wooded riparian zones. This animal is primarily fossorial (active underground) and nocturnal, and it is seldom encountered, except when dispersing above ground after rain. The demographics of these dispersing individuals may be heavily-skewed towards males searching for mates. This snake usually eats small animals, especially reptiles (Tennant, 2003; Maryland DNR site).
