Kingdom Animalia   >   Phylum Arthropoda   >   Class Insecta   >   Order Odonata   >   Family Coenagrionidae   >   Genus Nehalennia

Status:

Sedge Sprite (Nehalennia irene) is a small, delicate damselfly, which occurs in a wide variety of habitats with dense emergent or graminoid (grass-like) vegetation, such as ponds or marshes, or some types of bogs. This tiny damsel blends in well in this habitat, and may escape notice (Lam, 2004). The main distribution is primarily north of Maryland, but the species is common in Garrett County, and is also known from a handful of sites on the Western Shore (Richard Orr's Dragonflies and Damselflies of Maryland and the District of Columbia). It is ranked as S3 in Maryland.

There are 43 records in the project database.
