Water Veneer Moth Acentria ephemerella Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775    Synonyms: Hodges #5299.1.
Kingdom Animalia   >   Phylum Arthropoda   >   Class Insecta   >   Order Lepidoptera   >   Family Crambidae   >   Genus Acentria

Status:

Water Veneer Moths are widespread in their native Europe. It is uncertain whether they were introduced into North America accidentally or intentionally as a biological control against Eurasian Watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum).

Description:

The females have very short wings and are incapable of flight. They and their larval offspring are aquatic, feeding on a wide variety of aquatic vegetation. Males only live for 1-2 days searching for females and the opportunity to mate. The scales on the male's thorax and wings are dense and extremely short. This gives a translucent quality to the wings, and the false impression that the thorax and abdomen are bald.

There are 15 records in the project database.
