The spectacularly-marked Baltimore Checkerspot (Euphydryas phaeton) is the state butterfly of Maryland. This breathtaking species is considered to be uncommon and local in distribution, but is recorded in much of the state, except for most of the Eastern Shore. The flight period is in June (Butterflies of Maryland: A Biological Summary and Checklist by Lynn Davidson & Richard Smith).
Larval host plant is White Turtlehead. Does not use Red Turtlehead as a host plant. Has recently been found to be using the introduced English Plaintain (Plantago lanceolata) as a host in portions of the range. Adult visits milkweed, daisy, dogbane.
There are 100 records in the project database.
