Status

Historically, this species has been called Macrolepiota procera. However, research has shown that M. procera is a European species. It seems that the recently described Macrolepiota macilenta is the eastern North American counterpart (Lebeuf et al., 2024). However, a second species of Macrolepiota is also known from regions just north of Maryland. It is possible that additional species will be discovered in Maryland in the future.

Description

Cap: white to dingy gray-brown covered with brown scales concentrated on a prominent umbo (in age); dry; egg-shaped when young to convex in maturity, then broadly convex; flesh white (may turn reddish when cut or bruised). Gills: white, becoming brownish/pinkish in age; edges fringed; close. Stalk: white at top shading to brown at bottom; tapers up; base usually bulbous. Thick-edged moveable ring on upper stalk (J. Solem, pers. comm.).

Where To Find

Solitary or small groups along paths and wood edges, often in grass.

Eating mushrooms can be dangerous. One should do so only with expert advice and great care. MBP accepts no liability for injury sustained in consuming fungi or other biodiversity. Use of media featured on Maryland Biodiversity Project is only permitted with express permission of the photographer.
