The distinctive, lichen-colored Green Salamander (Aneides aeneus) is a specialized inhabitant of crevices in rocky sandstone outcrops, and sometimes adjacent forest. This salamander is near the northern edge of its known distribution in Garrett County, and it is considered state-endangered (ranked as S2-state rare). Due to the species' small overall range in the Appalachians and foothills, restricted habitat, and sensitivity to habitat disturbance, this salamander species has a global conservation status of G3 (vulnerable, moderate risk of extinction) (Conant & Collins, 1998; Maryland DNR site; Virginia Herpetological Society site).
