Common in sand hill habitats that border the Pocomoke River and Nassawango Creek regions of Worcester and Wicomico Counties. Uncommon in sandy interior habitats of Anne Arundel and Prince George's County (Patuxent Research Refuge).Taxonomically in limbo. While the official Maryland State Vascular Plant List (Knapp, Naczi) lists Pityopsis graminifolia var. graminifolia as the only species present in the state, the Weakley Flora of the Southeastern United States (A. Weakley, 2020) lists two species as occurring: Pityopsis aspera var. adenolepis and Pityopsis nervosa. Further research is needed.
