The Checkered Sculpin is an undescribed sculpin species in the genus Cottus that is endemic to the Potomac River drainage of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. It appears to be restricted to limestone and springs runs. It was formerly considered part of the Slimy Sculpin (C. cognatus) complex, but now seems universally considered deserving of full species status.
