Status

This is the Eurasian form of our North American Green-winged Teal. It is very rare in the state and was until recently considered "reviewable" by the MD/DCRC. Look for this species anywhere you find large concentrations of Green-winged Teal. Intergrades should also be considered/expected.

Description

The male Common Teal has a horizontal white stripe in the lower scapulars that is absent in Green-winged Teal. The male Green-winged Teal has a vertical white bar on the side of the breast that is absent in Common Teal. Males with both features - especially with one or both features "weaker" in appearance - may be intergrades.

Where To Find

Truitt's Landing, West Ocean City Pond (very rare)

Relationships

Nearly always found with large concentrations of Green-winged Teal.
