S-banded Tiger Beetle Cicindelidia trifasciata Fabricius, 1781 ascendens LeConte, 1851    Synonyms: Cicindela trifasciata.
Kingdom Animalia   >   Phylum Arthropoda   >   Class Insecta   >   Order Coleoptera   >   Family Carabidae   >   Genus Cicindelidia

Status:

Cicindelidia trifasciata is a small, wary tiger beetle species of mudflats, saltmarshes, and similar coastal areas, primarily to the south of Maryland. This species is well-known for its incredible dispersal flight capacity, and has even been found on offshore oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. Not unexpectedly, Cicindelidia trifasciata frequently occurs as a vagrant north of its normal range, and there are records from Calvert and Wicomico Counties. Knisley speculated that the species may be breeding as close as southeastern coastal Virginia (Knisley & Schultz, 1997).

There are 5 records in the project database.
