Found as individuals or in groups in well-rotted wood.
Cap: Purplish to grayish-brown; center usually darker; convex; usually striate, sometimes strongly so; viscid; soft, white flesh. Gills: White, becoming rusty-brown in age; close. Stalk: White, often with powdery tufts; equal or tapers up. (J. Solem, pers. comm.)
