Blue Cohosh is native to eastern North America. It is a spring perennial of rich deciduous woodlands, such as rich coves and well-drained floodplain forests.
The yellow to greenish flowers of Blue Cohosh give rise to large blue seeds that become readily visible as they quickly burst their little-developed fruit walls. This plant generally has two leaves--a large compound stem leaf and a smaller compound leaf below the inflorescence.
In Maryland, Blue Cohosh is common in the mountains, rare in the Piedmont, and little known on the Coastal Plain.
