White Admiral (Limenitis arthemis arthemis) is the northern version of the Red-spotted Purple. This butterfly shows very prominent white submarginal bands across its wings. While considered to be the same species, the Red-spotted Purple form astyanax is part of a Batesian mimicry complex of the distasteful Pipevine Swallowtail. Most admiral species have the prominent white bands of this subspecies, and they are likely ancestral traits in the genus. This subspecies is northern in distribution, and it is doubtful if it actually breeds in the state, though it may disperse into the northern portions. The two forms will readily intergrade where their ranges meet, and intermediate individuals can be frequent near the overlap zone.
Uses willows, poplars, and birches as larval hosts.
