Distributed from New Jersey south to Florida, west to Texas, and north to Missouri.
Leaves are distinctive because they are abruptly widened near the tip. Water Oak is a member of the Red Oak Group although its leaves are scarcely bristle-tipped.
Grows mainly on the Coastal Plain. Found in maritime forests and dune woodlands, various sandy habitats, also in wet alluvial areas, and successional and disturbed habitats (Weakley, et al. 2012).
Host plant for various moth species including Tephra Tussock Moth (Database of World's Lepidopteran Host Plants).
