This species is always found on hardwoods. Edible. (L. Biechele, pers. comm.)
Cap: From brick red in center to yellow-orange near margin; moist/dry, smooth; margin inrolled sometimes with veil patches; flesh some shade of yellow to yellow-brown, thick, firm. Gills: White to pale greenish-yellow when young to purplish-gray/purplish-brown in age; close. Stalk: Light above ring, dull brown or grayish below covered with reddish-brown fibrils; partial veil leaves sparse ring or annular zone; hollow (J. Solem, pers. comm.).
Scattered or clusters on hardwood logs/stumps.
