This breathtaking antlion has become a favorite at MBP for its dazzling pink and black markings on its wings. It is found throughout the southeastern United States, but reaches the northern limits of its range in Maryland and southern New Jersey. It is found in wooded areas on the Piedmont and Coastal Plain of Maryland.
Adults are large and distinctive. The bold pattern of dark and pink at the tips of the wings is diagnostic.
Unlike other antlion species, Glenurus gratus larvae do not make pitfalls in sand. They live in tree holes where they feed on ants and other small invertebrates.
There are 38 records in the project database.
