This species has undergone a major range expansion from the western U.S. in modern times. It is now found throughout the eastern U.S. and is expected throughout Maryland year-round.
Compare Purple Finch, which is much less common. Purple Finch breeds in far western Maryland and is an irruptive migrant and winter visitor.
