Description:

Cap: White/cream; dry, coated with tiny matted fibers; often covered with dirt; convex to flat to vase-shaped in age. Gills: White/cream, stain reddish-brown; crowded; forked. Stalk: White/cream often w/pale greenish band at apex; stains brownish; stout (J. Solem, pers. comm.).

Where to find:

Solitary, scattered, groups on ground in coniferous/mixed forests (J. Solem, pers. comm.).

Relationships:

May be attacked by Lobster Fungus.

<em>Russula brevipes</em> in Worcester Co., Maryland (7/4/2013). Notes from Lance Biechele: "This common species is quite interesting. First, on the western shore it is parasitized by a Hypomyces that turns this mushroom into the delectable "lobster mushroom." Unfortunately, that mold is not found on the Delmarva! Second, there is an identical species R. angustispora [described in Roody's book] that is mycorrhizal with Virginia pine. They can not be separated in the field." (Photo ID: 6939 - Psn: 30)
