The Rough-legged Hawk is a specialist of the high north, nesting in northern Canada and Alaska. Maryland is near the southern end of its wintering range on the East Coast. In recent years, the species has become increasingly difficult to track down in traditional winter haunts. Western Maryland now seems more reliable than many of the traditional areas on the lower Eastern Shore. Some speculate that warming temperatures are allowing birds to winter farther north. Some wonder if subtle changes in our salt marshes might affect their ability to successfully hunt those habitats.
