Red-bellied Snake (Storeria occipitomaculata) is a small species of snake, with most adults under a foot in length. This snake has a widespread, but somewhat localized distribution through Maryland. It occurs mostly in forested or edge habitats, or in wetlands, especially areas with cover objects, like rocks or logs, under which it may find its usual prey of slugs. This attractive snake varies in coloration from grayish, through reddish-brown. In some areas, melanistic individuals may be found, which are often very dark, with blackish ventral scales. This snake is usually located beneath cover, and is typically not seen in the open often (Tennant, 2003). Red-bellied Snake has a patchy distribution, but appears to be most common in western Maryland (Maryland DNR).
