Status

This species is among the most often encountered undescribed moth species in Maryland, flying from mid-May to early October. It may be the only Hypenodes species that is common and widespread in the state. This status had been assumed to be held by the similar Broken-lined Hypenodes Moth, a species that may prove to be restricted to the westernmost counties.

Description

Distinguishing H. sp. 1 from Broken-lined Hypenodes is tentative until a revision of the genus is published. A character that may help is the dotted antemedial line. H. sp. 1 typically has 3 dark dots between the margins, the subdorsal dot offset basad from the middle dot, with a large gap between the middle and subcostal dots, and with no clear indication of the dots being connected into a line. In the Broken-lined Hypenodes Moth, the antemedial line typically has more dots, including within the gap, and the dots may appear to be connected as an obscure line.

Relationships

Larval host plants are unknown.
