Status The diminutive Spring Peeper (Pseudacris crucifer ) is one of the most familiar frogs of spring. Its clear, ringing peep calls are loud and conspicuous, and they will call incessantly under the right conditions. This treefrog will breed in a variety of shallow wetlands, ponds, or ditches, usually with brushy habitat or woodland nearby, and dense vegetation at the body of water. They will often call from beneath mats of vegetation, and can at times be difficult to localize. This is among the most abundant and widespread frogs in Maryland (Conant & Collins, 1998; Maryland DNR site).
Description A small brown treefrog with a conspicuous X-shaped marking on its back.
Where To Find Almost any wetland. Listen for their distinctive calls.
