Cylindera unipunctata is a cryptically-colored tiger beetle, at home in shaded forest trails and leaf litter within deciduous forest. Its grayish-brown coloration, along with a tendency to freeze or hide in leaf litter frequently make it a frustrating species to locate or observe. While Cicindela sexguttata likes patches of sunlight within forest, unipunctata normally is found in the shade, or beneath leaf litter on the forest floor, and may be more active on cloudy days or late in the day. Knisley reports he has found the species in Virginia in shale barrens habitats. Howard Boyd discovered the species is widespread in the New Jersey pine barrens, and was most easily encountered by pitfall trapping. The species is likely more common than records indicate due to its cryptic behavior(Knisley & Schultz, 1997).
