A mature Northern Paper Wasp colony in a fence pole in Montgomery Co., Maryland (8/19/2010). Determined by Richard Vernier/BugGuide who notes: Yellow-faced individual with mainly olive-green compound eyes are the males, the red faced ones with hazel-brown eyes are the females. Large size of most of these latter indicates they are so-called gynes, i.e., fertile females who will be the foundresses of next year.
