Wood Frog (Lithobates sylvaticus) is a fairly small brown frog which breeds in late winter or early spring, usually in wooded vernal pools or seasonal wetlands. At these times, it can occur at breeding sites in enormous numbers, and the choruses can be quite loud. The call sounds a bit like a coughing sort of quack. At other times of the year, the adults of this species may be found in mesic woodlands, often far from breeding sites. This frog ranges farther north than any other herp in North America (Conant & Collins, 1998). It is famous for its ability to survive freezing of most of the body's tissues in winter, a trait which contributes to its extensive northern range. In Maryland, this frog is distributed statewide but more localized on the coastal plain.
A variable, reddish-brown or brown frog with a dark brown mask.
