Violet Woodsorrel grows in rich forest soils. Since rich forests are uncommon on the Coastal Plain, Violet Woodsorrel is more common in the Piedmont and Ridge and Valley Provinces.
In Maryland, Violet Woodsorrel is the only species of woodsorrel that has lavender flowers; almost all of the other species have yellow flowers. The leaves of Violet Woodsorrel have a clover-like appearance, as do the leaves of other woodsorrels, but Violet Woodsorrel's leaves differ in that they typically have a purple blush, which makes identification easy even when the plant is not in bloom. The leaves are all basal and often reddish-purple beneath.
Violet Woodsorrel is pollinated by bees. Some gardening websites state that it is a poor butterfly nectar source.
