In Maryland Sand Grape is restricted to populations found along the Potomac Gorge in Montgomery County. According to NatureServe (2015) the principal threat to Sand Grape is the changing hydrology of its riverbank habitats away from the natural flooding regime and periodic scouring (MD DNR, 2017). The first collection of this rare plant in Maryland was by E.S. Steele in 1896.
