Status:

Found on ground under conifers. Fruiting bodies shown here were found in sandy soil in areas where pines had been, but were no longer standing.

Description:

Cap: Tannish-pink when young often exuding red droplets, reddish or orangey-brown when mature sometimes with light edge, surface irregular, flat to concave; flesh fibrous, tough, light tan to dark brown; may have pungent odor especially when cut. Fertile surface: Spines beginning as pale brown becoming dark brown, some may have lighter tips. Stalk: Light brown to brown, stout. (J. Solem, pers. comm.)
